Ask me anything!

I get asked a lot of questions about writing, reading and my books (both published and works-in-progress). I’ve been in this biz for a long time, and I even mentor other writers through workshops at my local libraries. I love answering questions! So ask away. Is there anything about Kyra’s world from the Valkyrie Bestiary series you’d like to know about? (What’s with those opji vampires anyway?) Or are you curious about an aspect of writing or publishing? (Where do authors get their ideas from?). So...

...Ask me anything!

Here’s a little bit about Kyra’s world to get you started. Kyra is half Valkyrie and half dryad. She lives in Montreal Ward in the year 2080, fifty years after a devastating war broke countries, killed billions and severed the ley-lines to bring magic rushing back into the world. She is a pest controller who specializes in wrangling class three fae creatures. She lives in Sayntanne on the west end of Montreal island which is protected from the wastelands (known as the Inbetween) by a heavy-duty magical ward. The ward was built by fae magic and is maintained by the alchemists. Kyra has a crush on Henry Mason, captain of a vigilante group known as the Guardians.

If you’ve already read Dragons Don’t Eat Meat or the other books in the Valkyrie Bestiary Series feel free to ask about future stories. As long as there are no spoilers involved, I’ll do my best to answer. Below, I’ll start with some frequently asked questions from my Facebook groups and blog. Put your questions in the comments below, and I’ll try to answer as many as possible.

Q: How many critters does Kyra take care of?
A: In Dragons Don’t Eat Meat, Kyra has a basilisk, 2 madras, a very large bejeweled snail, 2 vampire slugs, 2 rats, bearded dragons, an eel, a pygmy kraken, an ice sprite and a cat. And a dervish who desperately wants to live with her. And now a baby dragon. There are others that aren't mentioned, and many others that she re-homes back to the wild land known as the Inbetween. She gets help caring for them from her banshee roommate/nanny, Gita.

Q: How old is Kyra? She sounds around mid 20’s.
A: Kyra is 78 years old at the beginning of the series. What? I know that sound crazy. But she went to live in Asgard when she was 18 and ate the famed Golden Apples. They kept her young. Now that she's back in our world she doesn't know if she will age any more. She looks to be about 25, but she takes a wait-and-see approach to immortality.

Q: Is the series complete?
A: No. Currently there are three books in the series, plus one short story prequel. (See the Series Reading Order page). But books 1-3 complete the first story arc that deals with Mason’s past. I am currently planning 9 books total (with some spinoff shorts). Books 4-6 will focus on Kyra’s past and we’ll meet some of her family from Asgard.

Q: How long have you been writing?
A: I wrote my first book of poetry when I was eight. It started like this:
Cats have fur.
They often purr.

And it got worse after that. I’ve been writing all my life. I published my first novel in 1999. After that I focused on children’s books for many years. In 2016, I turned back to my real fictional love, Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Suspense. I’ve been publishing in those genres ever since.

Who Let the Hounds Out

Hell Hounds Don't Heel releases today! I'm thrilled to bring you this third book in the Valkyrie Bestiary Series. If you pre-ordered Hell Hounds, it should be waiting for you on your Kindle. Don't you love getting surprise books? I know I do, and I want to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who pre-ordered.

If you haven't grabbed your copy yet, you can read a snippet on the Valkyrie Bestiary page. And everyone is invited to check out the deleted scene below from book 3. Sometimes, scenes end up on the cutting room floor. This might be simply because they aren't relevant to the story as a whole or they negatively affect the pacing of the plot. But they make fun reading, regardless. And so I bring you this deleted scene from Hell Hounds Don't Heel:

Kyra Discovers a New Species in an old Church

Emil lived in an old Catholic church that had been converted into apartments, not far from where Cyril died last fall. As I pulled to the curb, an older white woman rose from where she’d been crouching in the garden. Silver hair blew around her head in a cloud and she squinted behind oversized glasses.

The spring wind was fierce and I zipped up my jacket as I jumped from my truck. Emil had already parked and was standing next to the woman.

“Kyra, this is my landlady, Maude Bellamy,” he said.

Maude pulled off her garden gloves, but made no move to shake my hand. She was shorter than me by several inches, but her fierce blue eyes made her seem bigger in stature.

“Damn rats dug up nearly all my tulip bulbs. You need to whack ‘em before they get onto the roses.”

I glanced at the garden. Rats didn’t eat tulip bulbs, but when a customer had an idea in their head, it was best to just go along with it until you had proof otherwise. Even then, many of them would look at a trapped, hissing pooka and swear it was a raccoon. It was all about what let them sleep better at night.

Your story choices & book release schedule

The results are in! Last week I asked for feedback on potential side stories for Kyra and her menagerie of wild and whacky critters. Of the 5 choices, the overwhelming winner was the origin story of how Kyra met her banshee roommate, Gita. This makes me very happy because I’ve already started on this story, and hope to bring it to you soon.
If you missed out on the poll and would like to drop your 2 cents, you still can.

Valkyrie Bestiary 2021 Release Schedule

Sorting out upcoming stories has also let me arrange my tentative release schedule for 2021. I say tentative because I’ve learned that life if ever-changing and full of surprises. But if all goes well, here is the coming release schedule for the Valkyrie Bestiary Series.

April 2021: Gita origin novella
May 2021: Valkyrie Bestiary Boxed set (includes books 1-3 + 2 novellas)
July 2021: Kyra spin-off novella
October 2021: Valkyrie Bestiary Book 4
November 2021: Valkyrie Bestiary Book 5
December 2021: Holiday novella featuring the return of Ollie

You’ll notice that there will be no new full-length books until October. This is partly because my amazing cover artist, Pamela Francescut has gone back to school and won’t be available until then. I can’t imagine releasing a book without her amazing art to grace the cover. It is also partly because I can’t write faster than that. There was less than 4 months between books 2 and 3 and it nearly killed me. I know some authors can write and publish faster, but I’m not one of them. So this schedule will allow me to write books 4 & 5 back to back, then polish and publish them nearly simultaneously, so you’ll be able to read them one right after the other. And I’m really excited for the Ollie holiday book, but you’ll get no more from me about that one yet. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this schedule. Feel free to reply right to this email.

And don’t forget that Launch day for Hell Hounds Don’t Heel is less than a week away! Pre-order now to get $ and get it at pre-release prices.
